Agency Showcase – Handsome Frank

This week we feature the new, upcoming illustration agency ‘Handsome Frank‘. All posts this week will feature their illustrators and their beautiful and diverse work. Here is a little about them…

It all started with Frank. Frank & Kate had three daughters,
and in turn their daughters had eight children.

93 years after Frank was born, Handsome Frank was born.
An illustration agency representing some of the most
talented and original commercial illustrators in the UK.

So what’s this got to do with Frank? Handsome Frank was
founded by two of his grandsons.

Becca Thorne

Has developed a method of lino printing that allows her to work anywhere with a flat surface. Using water-based inks, first she prints onto fine, handmade paper (Thai mulberry paper or similar), then rubs the image through using the back of a spoon. This gives her greater control over the textures and tones in a print compared to using a press. Becca is heavily influenced by Anglo-Saxon and Medieval imagery and Japanese woodblock prints. As well as Art Nouveau, mid-20th Century book cover design and the natural world.

Matt Taylor

Has been drawing pictures since graduating in 2002 and mixes hand drawn line work with vector imagery. He pulls inspiration from comic book artists of the sixties and seventies, wild life, wild music and the treasures of thrift stores. He lives in Brighton where he can often be found travelling by bicycle and looking at the sea.

Emma Kelly

Emma started by drawing things onto a wall behind her parents sofa, aged two years old. Emma’s drawings are unusual and attractive, displaying her intuitive skill of drawing and use of colour. She knows what to leave in or what to leave out, along with when and where to draw the line – quite literally. As a result, the illustrations have a unique character, be it a portrait, street scene, or box of washing powder, and the ability to inject appeal into any subject matter no matter how everyday or unusual. Her parents are still unaware of the drawings behind the sofa.

David Janes

Since April 2009 David Janes has drawn over 400 portraits using pen and ink. Executed with vim, vigour, speed & haste, he has now begun drawing the 650 politicians who make up House of Commons.

Matthew Hawkins

Creates enchanting and seductive images which reach out from the page and beckon you deeper and deeper into my imaginary world. Pirates, mysterious creatures, travelers and exotic women inhabit luscious landscapes constructed from an unexpected combination of studies, doodles and sketches. The results are lucid, vibrant, intriguing and confrontational.

Lydia Fee

Lydia’s characteristically colourful and highly textured illustrations are created by combining painted elements, printmaking and collage techniques on screen. She loves to make use of photographs and fabrics collected on her travels and day-to-day life. Through adopting a versatile approach to composing her work Lydia’s primary concepts materialise into illustrations that are personal, evocative and playful.

Joe Crocker

A prolific illustrator with an individual approach to drawing. Working directly in pen and ink Joe’s work is imaginative, bold and darkly humorous. In contrast to the pen and ink style he also produces clean vector based illustrations. Originally from the New Forest Joe now lives and works in sunny Brighton, UK.
